Weekly Update

What's been going on?

Last week was a busy and eventful time in our classroom. The children received their reading boxes and writing folders! Each child has their own reading box where they keep the books and poems we create during centers. These books and poems are pieces of predictable text that children can read independently by using the pictures and reading sight words. It is awesome to see and hear the kids with these books and poems; they are becoming little readers already! Each child also has their own writing folder where they keep the pieces of writing they are working on.

We also worked on syllables last week and on Friday we graphed the number of syllables in our names. Here are some pictures of our graph as well as some from centers...

As you can see, most people in our class have 2 syllables in their name.
In reading center students begin by building a poem and highlighting the sight word.

Students worked on representing numbers in promethean center.

In writing center the students worked on writing sight words and recognizing color words.

Students sorted pictures by their beginning sound in ABC center.

In art center the kids made maize.

Last week was also spirit week. It was so great to see all the kids participate.
These are some "Wacky Tacky" feet!
I love all my little State fans, but...Go Heels! :)

One thing we can agree on...Joyner rocks!

Weekly Update

What's been going on?

Last week we spent a lot of time preparing for our field trip to Ganyard Hill Farms. We read lots of stories about pumpkins, where they come from, and things you can do with pumpkins after they leave the farm. On Friday, the children completed their Pumpkin Report. Students drew pictures of their pumpkins, where pumpkins grow, and things that are made from pumpkins. They also measured how tall their pumpkins were. Each child took home their pumpkin and report on Friday.

What's been going on?

Reading Buddies
Mrs. Kaswara's 3rd grade students are our reading buddies this year. Each student has a 3rd grade buddy. They visit us every Friday morning after the news and read with our class. All of the kids love this time and look forward to it each week.

Apple Feast
We had a BLAST at Apple Feast! It was such a fun morning and the kids really enjoyed it. They got to try so many different apple products and even help make some apple treats of their own. Thank you to everyone who sent in supplies or came in to help. Be sure to check out the slide show for pictures!

Letterland
I’m sure many of you have heard that last week our Kindergartners traveled to “Letterland” for the first time. Letterland is an imaginary and secret place where all the letters live. We have already met many Letterlanders and are so excited to meet more this week. “What exactly is Letterland?” Letterland is a unique, phonics-based approach to teaching reading, writing, and spelling to 3-8 year olds. The Letterland characters transform plain black letter shapes into child-friendly pictograms and they all live in an imaginary place called Letterland. Simple stories about the Letterland characters explain the full range of dry phonics facts so that children are motivated to listen, to think and to learn. These stories explain letter sounds & shapes, allowing children to progress quickly to word building, reading and writing.

Writer’s Workshop
We are beginning Writer’s Workshop this week. This is the framework for writing instruction and practice in the classroom. It allows students to determine the topics they will write about and work at their own writing stage and pace. The teacher serves as the facilitator and conducts daily mini lessons and conferencing with individuals and small groups. Students always love this time of day and I am excited to watch your child grow into a confident, developing writer!

What's new?
Listed below you will find our weekly curriculum update. This will help to guide and inform you on what Common Core objectives we are focusing on in the classroom. New concepts will always be in underlined.

Center Volunteer Calendar

I have posted the calendar for center volunteers under classroom links. We would like to have 1-2 volunteers for centers Monday-Thursday. If you would like to sign up, click on "Center Volunteer Calendar" then choose the month you want to sign up for from the tabs at the bottom. (I believe when you open the calendar it's going to show you January 2013 so you will need to click on October at the bottom for this month.) After that, just type in your name! Remember, centers are from 9:30-10:15, except on Mondays when we get started around 9:45.
