Time Flies!

It's hard to believe that I am preparing summertime activities for our rising FIRST GRADERS! It's amazing how time flies! Above you will find a “50 Days of Summer Activities” calendar for the kids which includes reading, writing, art, science, and dramatic play activities. This is designed to motivate your child to continue producing, imagining, and thinking critically during the summer days. While it is not necessary to complete each and every activity, please encourage him or her to try as many as they can. The activities will provide the stimulation that is needed to support and continue creative concepts during your child’s time away from school.

You will also find suggestions of books for your child to read organized by reading level. Please use these lists as a guide when visiting the public library or purchasing books. Books that are “just right” for your child will be the ones on their level, which will be included on their 4th quarter report card. To build fluency, have your child read books on an easier level. Books above their level will be too difficult. However, a child’s listening level is usually 2-3 grade levels above their reading level. If your child is reading at a first grade level, they can listen and comprehend books at a third or fourth grade level. Remember; don’t restrict their reading material to only books. Provide the chance to read other types of materials (magazines, comics, newspapers, recipes, game instructions, etc.). This will allow them to discover several reading materials of interest.

Marbles

We had such a great time at Marbles! A HUGE thanks to all the parents who chaperoned! The kids enjoyed all areas of the museum. After exploring the museum we all had lunch together and then headed to the IMAX theater. We watched "Born to be Wild" in 3D. This movie was about two special women who take in orphaned elephants and orangutans. We watched how the women and their helpers care for and feed the babies as well as prepare them for their future life, back in the wild. We all loved the movie and learned a lot about what animals need to survive. It was the perfect way to kick off our animal unit! I have posted pictures from the trip in a slide show to the right. ENJOY!

WELCOME BACK!

Welcome back! I hope you all had a wonderful Spring Break and are enjoying the beautiful weather that finally decided to find us! I am looking forward to seeing all of the kids on Tuesday. There are also a few from when Graham shared a Czech tradition with us before Spring Break. Enjoy!

Everyone really enjoyed "Seussical"!

Bunnies, ready to hunt!

Hunting for "SPRING"!

Everyone was really interested in learning about a Czech tradtion.

Daily Five
This week we’ll focus on using fluency and comprehension strategies while reading. Please see these new CAFÉ strategies below.
1. Move Through the Word – read tricky words by moving your finger through the entire word to help you sound it out
2. Say the word slowly, s-t-r-e-t-c-h it out – when you come to a tricky word, move through the word and stretch out the sounds to help you read the word
3. Blend the sounds together – after you stretch the sounds in a word, go back and blend the sounds together
4. Use a Smooth Voice – use a combination of decoding skills to read the words quickly and accurately
5. Retell the Story – discussing the characters, setting, and sequence of events in a story (first, next, then, last…)

Letterland/Word Work
We will continue learning about digraphs sh, ch, th, wh (ex. ship, wash, chick, which, thing…), as well as words with double consonants –ff and –ll.  We will also continue to review long and short vowels in words.
 Writer’s Workshop
This week we'll focus on using the vocabulary "first, next, then, and last" when writing a story. This will lead into procedural writing, which is writing that teaches the reader how to do something. We continue to work on writing complete sentences related to our topic using capitalization, spacing, and ending punctuation. We are also working on taking our stories from our head, to our hand, to our paper. Remember to encourage your child to write the sounds they hear, even when it results in a misspelled word! The important thing is for your child to recognize themselves as a writer and use what they know to tell their story! We are also learning that “When I think I’m done, I’ve just begun!” This focuses on writers adding more details to their picture and their words before starting a new piece.
Sight Words
I, see, like, my, the, can, am, we, will, go, to, play, he, she, and, made, is, went, said, love, with, what, here, are, they, you
Math
We will compare numbers using vocabulary “more than” and “less than”. We will focus on “one more than” and “one less than” this week.
 IB Attitudes
empathy, appreciation, curiosity, commitment, cooperation

Weekly Update

What's been going on?

Our class has been working very hard to earn 10 compliments from other teachers and adults at school. The class can earn compliments by walking in a straight and quiet line, helping our friends, and making good choices even when they think no one is watching! We finally earned our 10th compliment and we celebrated on Friday! The kids voted and decided they wanted to celebrate with an iPad party. It was great! Now we are working to earn 10 more, this time, for a donut party!

This week we will continue learning new strategies for reading, begin working on blends (ex. --ck like in pick) in Letterland, review 2d and 3d shapes, and take a break from our author study to celebrate St. Patrick's Day! On Friday we will be hunting for a leprechaun, if you would like to send any goodies for his cauldron, feel free...but don't tell the kids!!!

What's Going On?

Last week we celebrated Dr. Seuss by reading many of his books and participating in corresponding reading, writing, and art activities. This was such a fun author study! This week we will continue our series of author studies with Laura Numeroff.

 Daily Five

We have added many reading strategies to our CAFÉ board. While reading at home, ask your child to use the following strategies/tools:

1.Check for Understanding – think and discuss the story as you read, if you don’t understand or remember, go back and reread

2. Look at the pictures – take a picture walk before reading and preview the story

3. Check the picture – when you come to a tricky word, check the picture to help you decide what makes sense
4. Get your mouth ready - look at the first letter and get your mouth ready to read

5. Look at the cover and think about the story – helps to understand and predict what you are going to read, also gets your brain focused!

6. Remember New Words – stop and discuss vocabulary meaning while reading or any other time

7. Touch each word as you read – helps you become more accurate and fluent

Letterland/Word Work
We have been learning about the five Vowel Men in Letterland. The Vowel Men say their names in words (long vowel sounds).  This week we will continue working with vowels, both long and short.

Writer’s Workshop
We continue to work on writing complete sentences related to our topic using capitalization, spacing, and ending punctuation. We are also working on taking our stories from our head, to our hand, to our paper. One way you can help your child become a better writer is to encourage them to write the sounds they hear, even when it results in a misspelled word! The important thing right now is for your child to recognize themselves as a writer and use what they know to tell their story!

Sight Words
I, see, like, my, the, can, am, we, will, go, to, play, he, she, and, made, is, went, said, love, with, what

Math
We are still working on solving addition and subtraction problems up to 10. Our goal is for students to be able to fluently add and subtract within five. Ex. “I had five cookies and then I ate three. How many cookies do I have now?” or I had four pencils and then I found one more. How many pencils do I have now?” These are the types of questions we want children to be able to answer quickly, within 3 seconds.

IB Attitudes

empathy, appreciation, curiosity, commitment

Busy, Busy, Busy!

GO BAGS!
Your child will be bringing home their Go Bag on Monday. This bag contains 3 leveled books and 1 good fit book.  These leveled books are on your child's individual reading level and they should be able to read these books with little assistance from you. They are a great way to improve your child's reading! The Go Bags will always go home on Monday and are returned on Thursday. They should stay at home or be kept in your child’s backpack until Thursday so you can practice reading with your child every night. On Friday your child will shop for new books to bring home the following week.

BUILDING
We have learned a lot about 2d and 3d shapes. The children had an opportunity this week to show what they have learned by building their own shapes. They were given straws and play-do to work with. Next, they had to figure out how they could use these two materials to build shapes. They did a GREAT job!

 KINDERGARTEN ROCKS
At the beginning of the year we ordered blue tie-dye t-shirts. When they finally came in, many of you complained that there were holes or tears in them. We reported the holes to the t-shirt company and they sent us brand new t-shirts! The children were able to wear these new shirts for our in-house field trip on Friday. We hope you like them as much as we do!

VALENTINE’S DAY
We will be having a special Valentine’s Day snack on Thursday, February 14th. We will also be exchanging Valentine cards on Thursday. Please check your child’s OTIS on Monday for a class list. Please make sure you send a card for every child!

100th DAY
I cannot believe we have now been in school for just over 100 days! The year is flying by! To celebrate the 100th day the children participated in fun centers. They made a necklace with 100 pieces of pasta, created a 100th day hat, made and enjoyed a snack of 100 yummy things, drew a picture of themselves at 100, wrote a 100th day book, and built some really cool things with 100 cups. It was a blast!

MINI-METEOROLOGISTS
We had our in-house field trip on Friday and it was awesome! The kids learned lots of things about the weather and participated in different experiments. They tasted a cloud, made a tornado, made snow, and learned about positive and negative energy. Make sure you check out the slide show!

SCIENCE GO ROUND
We will be participating in a school wide science day on February 22nd. The children will be rotating from classroom to classroom and learning lots about science! Our schedule will be wacky that day so please BRING A BAGGED LUNCH! We will not be eating in the cafeteria.

DON’T FORGET
February 14th – Valentine’s Day
February 15th- Early Release (12:30)
February 18th- No School (Teacher Workday)
February 22nd- Science Go Round
