Busy, Busy, Busy!

GO BAGS!
Your child will be bringing home their Go Bag on Monday. This bag contains 3 leveled books and 1 good fit book.  These leveled books are on your child's individual reading level and they should be able to read these books with little assistance from you. They are a great way to improve your child's reading! The Go Bags will always go home on Monday and are returned on Thursday. They should stay at home or be kept in your child’s backpack until Thursday so you can practice reading with your child every night. On Friday your child will shop for new books to bring home the following week.

BUILDING
We have learned a lot about 2d and 3d shapes. The children had an opportunity this week to show what they have learned by building their own shapes. They were given straws and play-do to work with. Next, they had to figure out how they could use these two materials to build shapes. They did a GREAT job!

 KINDERGARTEN ROCKS
At the beginning of the year we ordered blue tie-dye t-shirts. When they finally came in, many of you complained that there were holes or tears in them. We reported the holes to the t-shirt company and they sent us brand new t-shirts! The children were able to wear these new shirts for our in-house field trip on Friday. We hope you like them as much as we do!

VALENTINE’S DAY
We will be having a special Valentine’s Day snack on Thursday, February 14th. We will also be exchanging Valentine cards on Thursday. Please check your child’s OTIS on Monday for a class list. Please make sure you send a card for every child!

100th DAY
I cannot believe we have now been in school for just over 100 days! The year is flying by! To celebrate the 100th day the children participated in fun centers. They made a necklace with 100 pieces of pasta, created a 100th day hat, made and enjoyed a snack of 100 yummy things, drew a picture of themselves at 100, wrote a 100th day book, and built some really cool things with 100 cups. It was a blast!

MINI-METEOROLOGISTS
We had our in-house field trip on Friday and it was awesome! The kids learned lots of things about the weather and participated in different experiments. They tasted a cloud, made a tornado, made snow, and learned about positive and negative energy. Make sure you check out the slide show!

SCIENCE GO ROUND
We will be participating in a school wide science day on February 22nd. The children will be rotating from classroom to classroom and learning lots about science! Our schedule will be wacky that day so please BRING A BAGGED LUNCH! We will not be eating in the cafeteria.

DON’T FORGET
February 14th – Valentine’s Day
February 15th- Early Release (12:30)
February 18th- No School (Teacher Workday)
February 22nd- Science Go Round

Weekly Update

What's been going on?
Daily Five
The Daily Five is going great! This week has been exciting because we are launching the last component of “The Daily 5”!! We are learning to “Read to Someone”. This week we are learning that there are 3 ways to read to someone.
Check for understanding (one book): One partner reads while the other checks for understanding. Then they switch jobs.
I Read – You Read : One partner reads; the other partner reads the same part of the story. This helps us to build fluency.
Read Two Different Books (two books): Partners read two different books and check for understanding.

During The Daily 5, we have 3 different focus lessons and the children self-select one of the 5 components to work on after each lesson.
The 5 tasks include:
*Read to Self
*Work on Writing
*Word Work
*Listen to Reading
*Read to Someone
Daily 5 is how we schedule our language block. CAFÉ is what we study during this time. CAFÉ is an acronym for the four major components of reading. They are:
C for Comprehension
A for Accuracy
F for Fluency
E for Expanding Vocabulary
Letterland
We have been learning a lot about the letter “s”! We’ve learned about plurals; when s makes the /z/ sound; and what sound occurs when we have 2 s’s together like in the word “class”. We are working on the short and long vowel sounds /a/ and /i/.
Sight Words
I, see, like, my, the, can, am, we, will, go, to, play, he, she, and, made, is, went

Math
counting objects and one to one correspondence, horizontal graphs, 3D Shapes (cubes, sphere, cone, cylinder), Venn Diagrams, different ways to make ten
IB Attitudes
empathy, appreciation, curiosity, commitment
