Time Flies!

It's hard to believe that I am preparing summertime activities for our rising FIRST GRADERS! It's amazing how time flies! Above you will find a “50 Days of Summer Activities” calendar for the kids which includes reading, writing, art, science, and dramatic play activities. This is designed to motivate your child to continue producing, imagining, and thinking critically during the summer days. While it is not necessary to complete each and every activity, please encourage him or her to try as many as they can. The activities will provide the stimulation that is needed to support and continue creative concepts during your child’s time away from school.

You will also find suggestions of books for your child to read organized by reading level. Please use these lists as a guide when visiting the public library or purchasing books. Books that are “just right” for your child will be the ones on their level, which will be included on their 4th quarter report card. To build fluency, have your child read books on an easier level. Books above their level will be too difficult. However, a child’s listening level is usually 2-3 grade levels above their reading level. If your child is reading at a first grade level, they can listen and comprehend books at a third or fourth grade level. Remember; don’t restrict their reading material to only books. Provide the chance to read other types of materials (magazines, comics, newspapers, recipes, game instructions, etc.). This will allow them to discover several reading materials of interest.
